Ceylon vs cassia cinnamon: a buying guide

Table of Contents
"Understand cinnamon names, choose sticks or powder for your recipe and check product identification."
Ceylon and cassia are different types sold under the common name cinnamon. Ceylon is commonly identified as Cinnamomum verum; cassia is another familiar cinnamon type. A practical purchase starts with a clear product description, the supplied form and the information on the pack.
How do I confirm which cinnamon I am buying?
Look for the named type and, where supplied, botanical identification and origin. Ask the seller when a label only says cinnamon and the distinction matters to you. A photograph or a low price cannot establish the identity or composition of a particular pack. Powder is especially difficult to identify by appearance alone.
Should I choose sticks or powder?
Follow your recipe. Sticks can suit preparations that call for a whole spice to be infused and removed. Powder is convenient for mixing into dishes or baking. They are not always interchangeable spoon for spoon: use the quantities and method in a suitable recipe, and confirm the form before ordering.
Does coumarin distinguish the types?
The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that cassia may contain substantial coumarin, while Ceylon contains only trace amounts. That general distinction does not establish the measured coumarin level of an Ajwad pack. A product-specific measurement would require relevant analysis. This guide does not give supplement doses or treatment advice.
Is cinnamon a treatment?
NCCIH states that research does not clearly support using cinnamon for any health condition. Use culinary spices for your recipe and taste; do not treat a shop’s product description as evidence of a medical effect. Questions about supplements or individual suitability belong with a qualified health professional.
What should I check after delivery?
Confirm the product name, form, net weight, batch details and best-before information against your order. Follow the storage directions and keep the label with the product if you transfer it to another container. Contact the seller about any discrepancy before using the pack.
